Noticing

In the book, “The Old Man in the Sea,” i’m noticing that Hemingway is starting to use more detail, and he is painting a picture in the readers head. In the last pages we have read I see that the details are starting to move away from the boys and mans relationhsip but now we are moving into the details of fishing, and why fishing is so special to this old man.

What I’m Noticing

In the story, “The old man in the sea” I am noticing that this boy and old man have a very very close relationship. This relationship started out when the boy was young, around five, and its developed into either a father son relationship or a grand-father and grand son relationship. We havn’t gotten to the very depth of this relationship yet, but I’m excited to find this out.  As we go on though I notice that the relationship is getting very personal.

The Old Man and the Sea

When we read this book in class, I definetly caught onto the little details of the conversation between the boy and the old man, such as a father son relationship. This book reminded me of a vacation in Alaska, when my father, my grandpa, and myself went on a charter in Valdez. We went halibut fishing and I was so mad because everyone was catching fish when I wasn’t. When I finally started getting happier and not grumpy I started catching fish like crazy. I think I even showed up my dad. The crazy part is on the fishing line there is two hooks, one for smell and the other for the fish to bite on. Well my father asked the captain if anyone had ever caught two fish on the hooks, and the captain said its never happened. Welll thats what I did, I caught two fish on the same hook, and it made me feel like I had accomplished a goal.

I think that an article is interesting and worth reading when it has detail, and can relate to the readers. Painting a picture to me with words is a great way to show me that this piece of writing is really interesting.

Olaudah Equiano

In class we read Olaudah Equiano’s story and we had to give examples about our feelings and how we connected to this story. I took one of the quotes that was said,”The buyers rush at once into the yard where the slaves are confined, and make choice of that parcel they like best.” I connected with this because it reminded me about the rush at the stores when people are doing last minute christmast shopping. I think that connecting with the details in this story helped me understand the meaning of the story better, by helping me get into the story and seek it out for ways I could connect. By connecting my feelings I think I recieved a better perspective or visual of the story.

Descriptive Writing

The descriptive writing piece came from the country magazine, written by a old couple talking about their house in the country and what they liked about it. This piece interested me because it tangible, I can picture what the place looks like, and feel the cold winter’s eve that they explain in detail. I can relate to the feelings of coldness, and also picture the campfire burning against the night sky. This piece brings up memories. I love this piece because I can relate to it in more then one way.

Best of all are the light patterns of sunrises an sunsets, or from a flickering campfire against the night sky-or even from the frosty slence of a clear winter’s  eve. The light bathes some of the islands on the lake and casts magical shadows on others. Rainbows are a frequent delight. Then there’s the changing character of the water. It can be smooth as glass or dark and full of raging whitecaps. Other times, it’s shrouded in the mist of a cool autumn morning.

First BLog

When I heard that we were going to be doing blogs, I was excited because I have never really had the chance to do blogs. I see blogs as more of a personal opinion site. You express what is on your mind, and then other can read your blogs and compare themselves to your blog, and can express there opinions also. When it comes to my experience with blogs, I have used them once or twice, but I have never really had like a site where I express all my feelings for things, and have outlooks on my opinions.  I think using these blogs will help a lot of us understand the use of blogs, and maybe even make some of us became even more interested in blogs.
